What it pairs with

  • Wiener Schnitzel
The wine's crisp acidity and white-pepper spice cut through the breaded crust and butter.
  • Roasted pike-perch (Zander)
Mineral salinity echoes the freshwater fish character; the body matches the richness.
  • White asparagus with hollandaise
Classic Wachau pairing: the wine's herbal notes bridge asparagus bitterness; acidity cuts the sauce.

History

The Kellerberg Ried sits directly above the F.X. Pichler cellars in Oberloiben on deep gneiss and primary rock. F.X. Pichler began bottling it as a single-Ried Smaragd in the early 1980s when the Vinea Wachau quality tier system was being codified.

  1. 1983 — Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus founded; Kellerberg Smaragd becomes part of the inaugural quality tier programme
  2. 1995 — Lucas Franz Pichler joins the estate, refining fermentation to larger oak Fuder for this cuvée
