Palate: orchard fruit, citrus, salinity

Trebbiano abruzzese from Torano Nuovo built to age. A 1995 tasted by Luciano Pignataro kept its straw-yellow brightness after 25 years and opened on renetta apple, dried camomile, sunflower, kaiser pear, medlar and bergamot.

What it pairs with

  • Raw Adriatic prawns
The citrus edge and salinity suit raw shellfish better than oak-aged whites.
  • Baccala with potatoes
Salt cod's richness meets the wine's acidity and orchard-fruit weight.
  • Ravioli with ricotta and Navelli saffron
Camomile and pear tones sit with saffron and fresh sheep's ricotta.

Frequently asked about Emidio Pepe Trebbiano d'Abruzzo

How long can Emidio Pepe Trebbiano age?

A 1995 bottle opened after more than 25 years had lost none of its straw-yellow brightness and was described as astonishing. The estate holds library stock and re-corks older vintages.

What does it taste like?

Luciano Pignataro found renetta apple, dried camomile, sunflower, kaiser pear, medlar and bergamot, unfolding as the wine oxygenated in the glass.

How is the wine made?

Emidio Pepe works organically at Torano Nuovo, treads the grapes by foot and vinifies in glass-lined concrete vats. Bottling is done without filtration.
