Cometa is Sicily's signature Fiano: Planeta introduced Campanian Fiano to Menfi soils and produced a wine distinct from Southern Italian Fiano with a mineral-salt and almond-toasted character specific to the Mediterranean coast.

What it pairs with

  • Grilled cuttlefish with almonds and mint
The wine's almond-mineral notes are a classical match for grilled cephalopods with nut dressings.
  • Pasta al pesto di pistacchio
Honeysuckle and stone fruit in the wine complement Sicilian pistachio pesto.
  • Langoustines with herb butter
Full body and mineral salinity support the delicate sweetness of langoustines.

History

Planeta's Cometa from Fiano, planted at Ulmo in Menfi in the early 1990s, became a landmark Sicilian white and helped establish Fiano as a versatile variety beyond its Campanian homeland. The 1998 first vintage won multiple international awards and established Menfi Fiano as a distinct sub-style.
