Pétalos is the estate wine of Descendientes de J. Palacios, drawing on the wider Bierzo holdings rather than a single Corullón site. It remains the bottling most drinkers meet first, and the one the house makes in volume.
Violets, rockrose blossom, graphite and smoke on the nose. The palate is concentrated rather than overripe, with humus, balsamic herbs and a sweet fruit lift. Medium bodied, high in acidity, with a long finish.
Drink between two and ten years from vintage. Half an hour open lets the balsamic note gain intensity in the glass.
Botillo del Bierzo and cecina de León are the local matches. Roast chicken with peppers works equally well.
One hundred per cent Mencía, from low-yielding old vines on slate in the Bierzo.
