Cheese with Miani wines

Montasio Local tradition Wikipedia's article on Friulian cuisine lists Merlot, Refosco and Cabernet among the common reds drunk with frico, Montasio and aged latteria. Merlot's dark plum and firm, fine tannin frame the savoury, granular paste of a long-aged wheel. Colli Orientali Merlot, Friuli-Venezia Giulia: Miani Calvari Merlot
Smoked ricotta (scuete fumade) Our pick Scuete fumade is a compact white whey cheese with a smoke note from juniper or beech. A dry Friulian Sauvignon with elderflower and high acidity lifts the mild paste, and its aromatic edge stands up to the smoke. Friuli Sauvignon, Friuli-Venezia Giulia: Miani Saurint Sauvignon
Formaggio di malga Our pick A well-aged malga wheel has a unique, intense flavour. A full-bodied Friulano raised on its lees, partly or wholly in wood, has the breadth to meet it, and its high acidity and almond note cut the firm paste. Full-bodied Friulano raised in wood, Friuli-Venezia Giulia: Miani Buri Friulano · Miani Filip Friulano

Gianfranco Gallo took over the family Isonzo plain cellar in 1978 and built Vie di Romans into the appellation's reference point. The 60 hectares on the alluvial gravel plain south of Cormons feed single-parcel Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Friulano with very low yields and lees-driven elevage. Vieris Sauvignon and Dessimis Pinot Grigio are the cellar's most-cited bottlings.

Tasting: Cellar visit at Vie di Romans by appointment with a vineyard walk through the river-shaped gravel parcels of the Isonzo plain and a flight of the Vieris Sauvignon, Dis Cumieris Friulano, Dessimis Pinot Grigio and Ciampagnis Chardonnay. Reservation required.

Signature wines: Vie Di Romans Vieris, Vie Di Romans Dis Cumieris, Vie Di Romans Dessimis, Vie Di Romans Ciampagnis, Vie di Romans Flors di Uis
