A luminous ruby Amarone whose nose runs from fleshy sour cherry and blackberry conserve through withered rose petals and sweet spice into eucalyptus, liquorice and chocolate shavings, then turns to noble chocolate and velvety coffee on a palate that is warm, soft and extraordinarily long.
Casa dei Bepi is Viviani's selection Amarone, made only in the years the estate judges worthy and named for the old house at Mazzano, the hamlet high above the Negrar valley floor where the estate has its vineyards.
The estate's note describes a luminous ruby with warm tints, an elegant nose of fleshy red fruit such as sour cherry and blackberry conserve, withered rose petals and sweet spices, followed by fine notes of eucalyptus, English toffee, liquorice and chocolate shavings. The palate is pervaded by chocolate falling away into a velvety coffee of rare complexity, warm and very soft, with perfect tannin, splendid freshness and an extraordinary length.
Between eight and thirty years from the vintage. This is the estate's long-ageing selection and it rewards patience; decant a young bottle for at least ninety minutes.
It is a selection bottling released only in vintages Viviani judges worthy, with longer cask ageing and considerably more aromatic detail than the estate's regular Amarone Classico.
