Wine and cheese in Vinho Verde

Queijo Serra da Estrela with Young Vinho Verde blend (Loureiro, Trajadura, Arinto) ★ 4.4

Our pick

Portugal Journeys calls Serra da Estrela one of the best cheese pairings at the Portuguese table with Vinho Verde: the wine's acidity cuts the cheese's fat and mild tang. A young, light blend of Loureiro and Arinto, often with Trajadura, does just that.

Queijo de Nisa with Barrel-fermented or barrel-aged Vinho Verde white ★ 4.3

Our pick

Nisa is semi-firm, slightly acidic and intensely aromatic. A Vinho Verde white fermented or aged wholly or partly in oak gains body and texture for it, and keeps the high acidity that meets the cheese's own.

Bottles to try:

Queijo Serra da Estrela with Vinho Verde white blend with Alvarinho, Avesso or lees ageing ★ 4.1

Our pick

Serra da Estrela is mild, clean and slightly acidulous with a buttery paste. A dry, unoaked Vinho Verde blend that brings in Alvarinho or Avesso, or rests longer on its lees, has a little more substance and still the high acidity to cut the cream.

Bottles to try:

Queijo Serra da Estrela with Alvarinho, dry white ★ 4.0

Our pick

Culture magazine calls all-Alvarinho Vinho Verde bigger and broader than the delicate Loureiro wines, so a dry Alvarinho can stand beside a soft, buttery Serra da Estrela while its high acidity still cleans the palate.

Bottles to try:

Queijo Serra da Estrela with Traditional-method Vinho Verde sparkling (Alvarinho, Loureiro, Arinto, Avesso) ★ 4.0

Our pick

Serra da Estrela is buttery and only slightly acidulous, and bubbles cut cream. A dry traditional-method Vinho Verde sparkling from the region's white grapes brings high acidity and the length that comes from time on its lees.
