What it pairs with

  • Roast suckling pig (cochinillo)
Classic Segovia-style pork and the wine's tobacco and vanilla tones are a traditional pairing.
  • Slow-braised oxtail
Gelatinous braised beef and the wine's mature complexity are mutually reinforcing.
  • Aged Manchego Viejo
Long-aged sheep's milk cheese and the wine's complex tobacco and dried fruit are a natural match.

History

The Protos Gran Reserva has been produced in top vintages since the late 1980s, embodying the classical Castilian tradition of long American-oak ageing followed by extended bottle cellaring before release. It is only released in exceptional years.

  1. 1927 — Bodegas Protos founded
  2. 1982 — DO Ribera del Duero granted
  3. 1988 — Protos Gran Reserva first produced in top vintages
