Aroma: cherry conserve, very ripe plum, small red fruits, spice, tobacco, chocolate

Palate: cherry, plum, cocoa, light mineral note

Deep ruby, with cherry conserve, very ripe plum, small red fruits, spice, tobacco and chocolate on the nose, and a powerful, fat, sweet palate that the estate insists is never cloying, returning cherry, plum, cocoa and a light mineral note.

What it pairs with

  • Cocoa and almond cake
Chocolate on the nose is echoed and the acidity keeps the pairing from turning heavy.
  • Plum tart
Very ripe plum in the wine is the same fruit on the plate.
  • Aged blue cheese
Sweetness against blue-cheese salt is the standard contrast pairing.

History

Recioto is the older of the two dried-grape reds of the Verona hills, and Roccolo Grassi makes an ambitious version alongside its Recioto di Soave, both built to hold their sweetness against a strong acid frame.

Frequently asked about Roccolo Grassi Recioto della Valpolicella

What does Roccolo Grassi Recioto della Valpolicella taste like?

The estate reports a full ruby colour, with cherry conserve, very ripe plum, small red fruits, spice, tobacco and chocolate on the nose. In the mouth it is powerful, fat and sweet but the estate stresses it is never cloying, and notes of cherry, plum, cocoa and a light mineral touch return.

Is Roccolo Grassi Recioto sweet?

Yes. Recioto is fermented only partly so that sugar from the dried grapes remains, and this bottling is described by the estate as sweet with great finesse and aromatic complexity.

Cocoa and almond cake, plum tart, or an aged blue cheese. It also works on its own after a meal.
