Vinho Verde wine and cheese

Queijo Serra da Estrela with Young Vinho Verde blend (Loureiro, Trajadura, Arinto)

Our pick

Portugal Journeys calls Serra da Estrela one of the best cheese pairings at the Portuguese table with Vinho Verde: the wine's acidity cuts the cheese's fat and mild tang. A young, light blend of Loureiro and Arinto, often with Trajadura, does just that.

Queijo de Nisa with Barrel-fermented or barrel-aged Vinho Verde white

Our pick

Nisa is semi-firm, slightly acidic and intensely aromatic. A Vinho Verde white fermented or aged wholly or partly in oak gains body and texture for it, and keeps the high acidity that meets the cheese's own.

Queijo de Azeitão with Loureiro, dry unoaked white

Our pick

Azeitão is buttery and creamy, slightly spicy, acidic and salty. An unoaked varietal Loureiro, light to medium in body with high acidity, cleans the cream from the palate and leaves the spice alone.
