Crete via Heraklion: Vidiano and Liatiko grapes

Heraklion in Crete is reachable by fast ferry from Santorini in around two hours and gives access to the broader Cretan wine region. The indigenous Vidiano (white) and Liatiko (red) varieties are the appellation specialties, with PDO Daphnes and PDO Peza centred on hillside vineyards south of Heraklion. A day trip combining the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Knossos, and a winery visit to producers such as Lyrarakis or Boutari Crete is ambitious but feasible.

Ios: nearest Cyclades neighbour by fast ferry

Ios is the closest Cycladic neighbour to Santorini, reached in around an hour by fast ferry from Athinios port. The island has a small modern wine production at Ios Winery on the family Plakoton estate, working with Assyrtiko and Monemvasia alongside Cycladic herbs and indigenous varieties. The combination of Hora village, beach time, and a cellar visit makes Ios a viable single-day excursion from Santorini.

Naxos: Mandilaria and Cycladic island wine

Naxos is the largest Cycladic island by area (around 430 square kilometres) and home to a small but historic wine production based around the indigenous Mandilaria red and a handful of white varieties grown on the central mountain villages. The Tsantsanaki Winery and the Saint Anna estate are among the visitable cellars near Hora Naxos. A day trip from Santorini gives access to a contrasting Cycladic wine culture with longer beaches and a different terroir.

Folegandros: quiet Cyclades sister island

Folegandros is the quietest of the small Cycladic islands within easy ferry reach of Santorini, reached in around 90 minutes by fast ferry. There is no significant commercial wine production on Folegandros itself, but the dramatic cliff-top Hora village and the coastal walks make it a complementary visit for a slow-paced wine-region rest day. Local tavernas pour Santorini and Cycladic wines and the absence of cruise tourism makes the island markedly calmer than Santorini.
