Vienne is the historic Roman colony of Vienna and the starting point of northern Rhone wine history. Vienne is also the northern gateway to Condrieu AOC: the Viognier appellation begins just south of the city at Chavanay and Condrieu village, making a combined cultural-wine half-day natural.

Bandol AOC, on the Mediterranean coast between Toulon and Marseille, is Mourvedre's heartland: the grape that appears as a supporting variety in Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Vacqueyras here becomes the majority variety (minimum 50 percent) in structured reds with extraordinary ageing potential. Domaine Tempier, founded by Lulu Peyraud (a formative influence on Alice Waters and California cuisine), is the iconic Bandol estate. The contrast with the Rhone's Grenache-dominant style is instructive for any Rhone visitor.
