Bratislava and Vienna are Europe's closest pair of capital cities at roughly 50 kilometres apart, and Bratislava's own Rača district has grown wine since Roman times, making it an easy add-on contrast stop to a Vienna-and-Burgenland wine itinerary.
Vienna is the only capital city with significant commercial vineyards inside its own limits. Its Wien DAC Gemischter Satz, a field blend of several white grapes grown and fermented together, contrasts with Burgenland's Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch reds, and the Heuriger tavern culture of Grinzing and Nussdorf makes an easy half-day contrast trip.
