The Fira de la Candelera is a centuries-old multi-disciplinary market and trade fair held in Vilafranca del Penedes around the Candlemas feast day in early February. It runs across Plaça Jaume I and the surrounding streets with a wine pavilion that hosts the early-February tastings from DO Penedes producers. The fair traces its origins to the 12th century and is one of the oldest in Catalonia.

Festa de la Verema de Sant Sadurni ★ 4.3

Sant Sadurni d'Anoia

The Festa de la Verema in Sant Sadurni d'Anoia opens the Cava harvest season with grape-treading demonstrations, blessing of the grapes ceremonies and outdoor tastings at the wineries of Plaça de l'Ajuntament. The festival features children's programmes during the day and live music in the evening. It complements the larger Vilafranca harvest events held later in the autumn.

Tip: The grape treading happens twice on Saturday afternoon; arrive 15 minutes before the published slot to get a good viewing position.

Festa Major de Sant Sadurni and the Fil-loxera tradition ★ 4.5

Sant Sadurni d'Anoia

The Festa Major de Sant Sadurni d'Anoia is the town's principal annual fiesta in early September, anchored by the symbolic Fil-loxera dragon (the phylloxera-louse character that represents the 1887 vineyard plague). The programme includes the Diables fire-run, the gegants parade, sardanas, and producer-led Cava tastings in the squares around the town centre. The Fil-loxera puppet emerges from the Codorniu cellars on the opening night.

Tip: The Fil-loxera fire-run is held on the festival's opening Friday and is the most photographed event of the week. Wear cotton clothing for the spark show.

Sant Sadurni d'Anoia

Cavatast is the principal producer-led Cava tasting event of the Penedes calendar, held on the first weekend of October across the streets and Plaça de l'Ajuntament of Sant Sadurni d'Anoia. Around 30 to 40 Cava and Corpinnat producers pour current and reserve releases through tasting tents, alongside food stands from local restaurants. The event has been organised by the town council since 1991.

Tip: Buy a tasting bracelet at the central marquee, which includes the official glass and 12 tasting tokens. The producer tasting opens earlier on Saturday than on Sunday.
