Camino wine weekend, Ponferrada to Villafranca ★ 4.6
Day 1
Morning
Start at the Templar castle in Ponferrada, then walk the old town down to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Book the Guías Bierzo castle visit if you want the Templar history told properly.
Afternoon
Drive fifteen minutes north to the Emilio Moro winery on the Molinaseca road for the cellar visit and four-wine tasting, or fifteen minutes west to Heredad Morán & López at Puente Boeza for the vineyard panorama.
Evening
Wine and tapas walk through the old town from La Barbacana below the castle to La Berza on the Plaza Tierno Galván.
Day 2
Morning
Drive to Camponaraya and stop at the CIVI interpretation centre on the Camino for the background, then at Viñas del Bierzo next door, the 1963 co-operative that pilgrims walk past.
Afternoon
Cross to Pieros for the Godelia Experiencia Godello, ninety minutes and three wines, then on to Villafranca.
Evening
Walk the Calle del Agua, the street of old cellars, and finish at Pérez Caramés' La Torre for the sixty-minute cellar tasting.

Day 1
Morning
Start in Villafranca del Bierzo. Walk the Calle del Agua and the Puerta del Perdón, then take the Cantariña tasting at the Cabaña de los Pinos in the Las Gundiñas paraje, ninety minutes and three wines.
Afternoon
The Pérez Caramés Visita El Toleiro, two hours through 32 hectares of organic vineyard, finishing on three wines in the 17th-century La Torre cellar.
Evening
Glasses at the Hostal Vinoteca Ultreia on Calle Puentecillo.
Day 2
Morning
Drive up to Corullón, the slate and quartzite edge of the DO where Descendientes de J. Palacios farms around 30 hectares of very old vines biodynamically. The village and its viewpoints are the reason to make the climb.
Afternoon
Valtuille de Abajo, where a dozen bodega doors sit within a few streets. Book ahead at one of them and walk the rest of the village.
Evening
Back to Villafranca.
Day 3
Morning
Arganza for the Pittacum visit, sixty minutes through the vineyard and the 19th-century Casona, closing on Petit Pittacum and Pittacum.
Afternoon
The Prada a Tope Picantal visit at Canedo: the working cellar, the Xamprada cava, a carroviñas ride through the organic vines and three wines.
Evening
Cacabelos. Buy across the DO at Mencía & Godello in Ponferrada if you are driving out that way, or at the co-operative shop on the Avenida de la Constitución.
Las Médulas, botillo and Mencía, four days ★ 4.6
Day 1
Morning
Las Médulas. The Orellán viewpoint over the ruined red landscape, the galleries and the Roman canal walks, half an hour from Ponferrada.
Afternoon
Twenty minutes on to Puente de Domingo Flórez for Pago de los Abuelos, mountain Godello and Mencía on the DO's south-western edge.
Evening
Back to Ponferrada for the Templar castle at dusk.
Day 2
Morning
East into the Bierzo Alto. Dominio de Tares at San Román de Bembibre by appointment, in the cooler eastern end of the DO.
Afternoon
Valdecontina at Albares de la Ribera, on the north slope of the Boeza valley, working named parcels since 1913.
Evening
Return to Ponferrada and walk the old town bars.
Day 3
Morning
Cacabelos. The Museo del Vino on the Avenida de la Constitución, then M.AR.CA on Calle Las Angustias, a museum inside an 1892 bodega that kept its twelve tinos and its lagar.
Afternoon
Losada Vinos de Finca on the LE-713 out of Cacabelos, booked ahead, then Bodega del Abad at Carracedelo for the 15-euro visit and tasting.
Evening
Carracedo del Monasterio, and the Cistercian house that spread the vine through the comarca, a few minutes from the winery.
Day 4
Morning
Camponaraya: the CIVI interpretation centre in the Espacio Natural La Cuesta, then the 1963 co-operative on the Camino next to it.
Afternoon
The Calle del Agua cellars and the Puerta del Perdón, closing with the Pérez Caramés tasting at La Torre.
Evening
Last glasses at the Hostal Vinoteca Ultreia before the drive out.
