NeighbourhoodSan Vito lo Capo, Trapani province

Tip: The wine programme is secondary to the couscous competition but the Grillo and Catarratto pourings from Trapani-area producers are worth attending; pair with the Sicilian fish couscous of San Vito.

Marsala DOC harvest open-cellar days ★ 4.6

Marsala, Trapani province

During the September-October harvest, Cantine Florio, Pellegrino, Donnafugata (Marsala base) and Marco de Bartoli open their historic bagli (warehouse cellars) for guided visits showing the new-vintage Grillo and Catarratto base wines beginning their Marsala solera ageing process alongside reserves going back decades. The combination of active fermentation aromas and aged-oxidative notes makes harvest visits to Marsala cellars a distinctive sensory experience.

Tip: The Florio bagli on the Marsala seafront contains reserves over a century old; the tour guide can usually pour a Vergine Stravecchio alongside the new vintage base wine for the full spectrum.

Etna Wine Festival ★ 4.4

Zafferana Etnea or Randazzo, Etna

The Etna Wine Festival is a summer consumer-facing event on the slopes of the volcano, typically in Zafferana Etnea or Randazzo. Dozens of Etna DOC producers pour Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Carricante alongside food from Etna's mountain larder (pistachios, honey, mushrooms). The summer timing allows evening tastings as temperatures cool after sunset.

Tip: Evening sessions on the volcano are the most atmospheric. Temperatures at 700 metres drop sharply after sunset; a light jacket is useful even in July.

Sicilia en Primeur ★ 4.7

Palermo

Assovini Sicilia's flagship annual event, held in Palermo, brings together over 100 Sicilian producers to present new vintages to international press and trade buyers. The format mirrors Bordeaux en primeur: barrel samples and current-release wines are tasted simultaneously, and the association publishes a vintage character assessment for the island. Trade and press credentials are required for full access.

Tip: The walk-around tasting on the second day is the best opportunity to compare Etna, Nero d'Avola, Cerasuolo di Vittoria and Grillo side by side. Book accommodation early as hotel space in central Palermo during the event is limited.

Contrade dell'Etna ★ 4.8

Randazzo or Solicchiata, Etna

The Contrade dell'Etna gathering is the premier event for tasting single-contrada Nerello Mascalese wines from the named lava-flow micro-zones of the Etna DOC. Held on or near the volcano (typically in Randazzo on the north face), the event is invitation-heavy and trade-oriented but increasingly opening consumer allocation. It is the only place to taste Solicchiata, Calderara Sottana, Guardiola, Caselle and Santo Spirito contrade side by side.

Tip: Follow the Etna DOC consortium and individual producer social media channels for ticket availability, which typically goes live four to six weeks before the event.

Cantine Aperte in Sicily ★ 4.5

Island-wide: Marsala, Etna, Vittoria, Menfi

Movimento Turismo del Vino's national Open Cellars day is observed across Sicily with dozens of producer estates opening for walk-in tastings, cellar tours and vineyard picnics. The event is particularly active in Marsala, the Etna DOC, the Vittoria-Ragusa area and along the Menfi coast. Producers normally closed to walk-in visitors use Cantine Aperte as a rare point of open access.

Tip: Plan routes by sub-zone as Etna, Vittoria and Marsala are each a long drive from each other. Choose one zone and do it thoroughly rather than attempting a cross-island circuit.

ViniMilo ★ 4.3

Milo, Etna (eastern face)

ViniMilo is a small annual fair held in the village of Milo at the eastern foot of Etna. Milo is the only commune entitled to use the prestigious Etna Bianco Superiore DOC designation, and the fair celebrates this distinction with outdoor tastings of Carricante-based whites alongside Etna Rosso producers from across the volcano. Local food stalls specialising in Etna produce accompany the wine.

Tip: Milo sits on the cooler eastern face of Etna. The village is tiny; base accommodation in Zafferana Etnea below and drive up. The fair is free to enter but individual producer pours may require a token system.
