Mád
Mád village hosts its annual wine festival on the last weekend of September, just before the Aszú harvest begins. The village's leading estates open their cellar doors simultaneously for walk-in tastings, and producer stands line the village square. The festival draws wine professionals from Budapest and international buyers who come to taste single-vineyard Furmint from the Mád terroir, including the Nyulászó, Betsek and Szt. Tamás vineyard sites.
Tip: Arrive on Saturday morning for the best access to small producers before the afternoon crowd. Mád has only a handful of accommodation options; book months ahead.
Tokaj wine region
The Aszú Festival is the annual celebration of Tokaj's signature botrytised wine style, held in October when the Aszú berry harvest is underway. The event brings together producers making Aszú 5 puttonyos, single-vineyard Aszú and Eszencia, with vertical tastings and masterclasses. It is the most focused showcase of Tokaj's heritage sweet-wine identity for collectors and connoisseurs.
Tip: Older Aszú verticals are poured at producer-hosted evening events; contact producing estates directly to secure an invitation to these smaller-format tastings.
Tarcal
The Tarcal wine festival celebrates the village immediately east of Tokaj town, home to Disznókő and several other leading estates. Cellars and tasting rooms open across the village simultaneously, with local gastronomy stalls offering Zemplén food pairings alongside the wines. The Lapis and Mézes Mály vineyard parcels around Tarcal are the key terroir focus of the tasting programme.
Tip: Tarcal is a quieter base than Tokaj town; the walk from the main square to the Disznókő estate gate takes 20 minutes through the vineyard lanes.
Multiple villages, Tokaj wine region
The Tokaj Wine Region Day is a coordinated open-cellar event across the 27 villages of the UNESCO-listed Tokaj Hegyalja. Producers simultaneously open their cellar doors for walk-in tasting, heritage walks are organised through the UNESCO landscape, and joint tastings are held at the regional wine house in Tokaj town. The day celebrates both the viticultural year and the living heritage landscape of the Hegyalja.
Tip: Hiring a private driver for the day is the most efficient way to visit three or four villages across the region; the distance from Tokaj town to Mád via Tarcal and Rátka is about 25 km of vineyard roads.
Hercegkút
Hercegkút's annual Cellar Day opens the UNESCO-listed Gombos-hegyi cellar village to visitors for a day of open cellars, Aszú and Szamorodni tastings by candlelight, and traditional food pairings. The cellar village, carved into volcanic tuff by 18th-century Swabian settlers, is an extraordinary wine heritage site in the Zemplén hills. Dozens of individual cellar owners open their doors and pour from personal reserves.
Tip: The cellar street is a 15-minute walk uphill from the Hercegkút village centre; arrive in the late afternoon to catch the golden light in the cellar doorways before the evening tasting hours.
Budapest
VinCE Budapest is Hungary's largest annual wine trade fair, held at the SYMA Hall in Budapest. Tokaj producers take a significant section at the fair, making it the most accessible single-event platform for tasting across the entire Tokaj portfolio in one place. The fair spans three days with trade-only access on the first day and public access on the second and third. Masterclasses on Furmint, Aszú and Hungarian wine broadly are a key part of the programme.
Tip: Buy tickets in advance online; the Tokaj stand grouping is typically in the central hall on the ground floor and is the busiest section of the fair on the public days.
