The Cinque Port citadel above the Rother marshes, with cobbled Mermaid Street, the early 14th century Ypres Tower, Lamb House where Henry James lived, and Camber Castle out in the harbour nature reserve.
Pours: Oxney Organic sparkling, Tillingham low intervention wines
Tip: Oxney at Beckley and Tillingham at Peasmarsh are both under fifteen minutes out, which makes Rye the obvious base for the Rother Wine Triangle.
The Roman street plan still meets at the Market Cross. Chichester Cathedral keeps a detached medieval bell tower, Pallant House Gallery holds modern British art, and the Festival Theatre runs all year.
Pours: Tinwood Estate sparkling, Ashling Park sparkling
Tip: Tinwood at Halnaker and Ashling Park at West Ashling sit either side of the city, so a matinee at the Festival Theatre bookends two tastings.
Petworth House and its attics, tunnels and historic kitchens sit behind a town that trades more than 30 antique dealers within a mile, and Roebuck and Upperton both work vines on the greensand just outside it.
Pours: Roebuck Estates sparkling, Upperton Vineyard sparkling
Tip: Upperton's Terrace Bar runs May to September, which is the same window the Petworth gardens are worth the walk.
A 160 kilometre National Trail along the chalk ridge from Winchester to the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head at Eastbourne, almost all of it off road, passing Bronze Age barrows and Iron Age hillforts on the way.
Pours: Sussex sparkling at the vineyard at the end of the walk
Tip: Southease to Rodmell, Ditchling Beacon to Court Garden and Alfriston to Rathfinny all end at a vineyard, which is the point.
Battle Abbey marks the 1066 battlefield, and the moated castle at Bodiam sits at the head of the Rother valley, a mile from the vines America Brewer planted at Park Farm Oast in 2018.
Pours: Oastbrook still and sparkling, Sedlescombe organic wines
Tip: Bodiam and Oastbrook are close enough to do on one stop, and Sedlescombe is ten minutes further up the Hawkhurst road.
The city the Sussex wine trade sells into. The Royal Pavilion, the Lanes and the i360 sit within a few streets of the county's densest run of wine bars and bottle shops.
Pours: Sussex sparkling by the glass, Natural and low intervention wine
Tip: Base yourself here for a weekend and treat the Downs vineyards as half day trips rather than the other way round.
