A high alpine crossing above Martigny, reached via Bourg-Saint-Pierre, where a hospice founded in 1049 and a Roman road mark one of the oldest crossings in the Alps.

Pours: The Hospice founded in 1049, its St Bernard rescue dogs, and a Roman-era road and temple site at the summit

Lavaux Vineyard Terraces

Valais's other great Chasselas landscape lies a train ride down the lake: the Lavaux terraces between Lausanne and Vevey, a UNESCO World Heritage vineyard since 2007. No Vaud vineyard listings are published on Cork and Curve yet, so this stays a scenic and tasting detour rather than a linked producer trail.

Pours: UNESCO-listed Chasselas terraces between Lausanne and Vevey, inscribed in 2007, with roughly 450 km of dry-stone walls and over 10,000 individual terraced plots farmed by close to 180 winegrowing families

Chamonix

A cross-border rail trip from Martigny to Chamonix in France, host of the first Winter Olympics in 1924 and gateway to Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Western Europe.

Pours: Cable car to the Aiguille du Midi at 3,842 m, and Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Western Europe
