Established in 1918 by cooper Dimitris Melitzani and now run by the third and fourth generations, Ktima Melitzani farms 2.2 hectares of organic Xinomavro on Gastra hill, one of the appellation's prime sites.

Tip: A century of continuous family ownership on a single named hillside is rare even by Naoussa standards.

Gastra

Dimitris Melitzani, described on the estate's own site as one of Naoussa's finest barrel makers, founded the winery in 1918. The third and fourth generations now farm about 2.2 hectares organically on Gastra hill.

Why locals love it: Founded by a cooper rather than a grower, now farmed organically by the fourth generation on 22 stremmata of a single named hill, small enough to stay off most tour itineraries.

Tip: Gastra is a named single hillside, not a village, so confirm the turning with the estate before driving out.

Family cellar working an organically farmed vineyard parcel on the Gastra hillside, worked since 1918. The producer's own site names the organic plot separately from its conventional rows.

Tip: No certifying body is named on the producer's own page, so ask at the cellar door which lots go into which bottling.
