Domaine Benoit Badoz ★ 4.3

Certified organic domaine in Poligny, passed father to son since 1659 over ten generations, working mainly in vin jaune and vin de paille alongside the rest of the Jura range.

Tasting: Tasting and sales at the Badoz Vins et Fromages shop, 19 Place des Deportes in Poligny, Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 7pm, Friday and Saturday 8.30am to 7pm, Sunday morning 9am to 12pm.

Tip: The Poligny shop pairs the wines with Comte from the family cheese business, which is the local way to taste vin jaune.

La Croisee Comtoise ★ 3.9

Six hectares of Poligny vines taken over on 1 July 2021 by growers continuing the parcels previously farmed by the Reverchon family.

Tip: One of the few cellar doors inside Poligny itself rather than out among the vines.

Le Caveau des Jacobins ★ 4.0

Poligny shop of the Fruitiere Vinicole d'Arbois on the Grande Rue, selling the co-operative's range by grape across the Jura appellations.

Tip: The handiest place to buy a clavelin of vin jaune without driving out to Arbois.

Via Temporis ★ 4.1

Guided walking visits of the Jura wine villages, Arbois, Poligny, Chateau-Chalon and Pupillin, run year round on fixed slots from 9:00 to 19:30.

Tip: The Arbois walk runs through the church of Saint-Just and the town's Burgundian origins as well as the vineyard story.

Le Biou de Montholier ★ 4.0

Instituted in 1901 by an Arbois grower who had settled in Montholier. Two moulds shape the bunch, four men carry it to the church, and it stays on show for a week or more before the grapes are given away.

Pours: Cotes du Jura whites, Cotes du Jura reds

Tip: Montholier worked close to 100 hectares of vine in 1870 and has almost none left, so this is a procession kept up by a village that no longer really grows wine. The team running it has said openly that it needs younger members.

Le Petit Bouilleur ★ 4.0

Small organic distillery at Abergement-le-Petit west of Poligny, working wood-fired traditional stills and local ingredients for absinthe verte and arquebuse.

Tip: Everything is certified organic and distilled over wood rather than gas, which the distiller treats as the point.

La Maison du Comte ★ 4.2

Interpretation centre for Comte AOP at Poligny, covering the terroir and history of the cheese that the Jura pours vin jaune alongside.

Tip: Poligny calls itself the capital of Comte, and the museum is the natural stop before a vin jaune and Comte pairing.

Domaine Benoit Badoz ★ 4.5

A Poligny family making wine since 1659, with most of the current list labelled BIO: the Tradition, the Cuvee Arrogance, the Savagnin Type, the Trousseau Marnes Rouges and the Macvin all carry it.

Tip: The organic range spans 15.50 to 35.90 euros, so this is the cheapest single place in the vineyard to taste a certified organic Jura line from Chardonnay through to vin de paille.

Domaine Benoit Badoz, Grains de Poulsard sans soufre ★ 4.4

The Poligny estate bottles an organic Poulsard with no added sulphur, listed at 18.90 euros for the 2023. It is the most easily bought zero-sulphur bottle in the vineyard.

Tip: Ask for it chilled and keep it that way. Buy it on a day you are driving home rather than at the start of a week in the car.
