Late wine bars, listening rooms, fortified specialists and evening tastings across Abruzzo.

Wine Bars Late in Abruzzo

Garibaldi Enoteca & Cucina ★ 4.4

Alto TirinoMon, Wed-Fri 19:30-01:00. Sat-Sun 11:30-15:00 and 19:30-01:00. Closed Tuesday.

A wine bar and kitchen on Via Garibaldi, the late street of L'Aquila's historic centre, opened in 1999 by the Stratta brothers. Steakhouse plates, pizza and filled panini until one in the morning.

The list: A bottle list the Stratta brothers describe as di primissima scelta, with sparkling wines and spirits from outside Italy alongside the Abruzzo range.

Tip: Via Garibaldi is where the city drinks late. Four more places on the same 200 metres stay open past one, so start here and walk.

Il Tavernacolo ★ 4.1

Alto TirinoLunch from 11:00 to 15:00 and evening service from 19:00.

A wine room on Piazza Santa Giusta pouring loose wine and bottles with panini, piadine, charcuterie and cheese boards and bruschette. It also hosts tastings and private events.

The list: The house describes ottimi vini sfusi e in bottiglia, wine by the carafe as well as by the bottle, with tastings run on request.

Tip: Wine by the carafe is close to extinct in Italian city centres. This is the cheapest way in L'Aquila to drink Montepulciano by the glass all evening.

Le Petit Clos ★ 4.0

Alto TirinoMon-Sat 18:00-01:00. Closed Sunday.

An evening-only wine room on Piazza Regina Margherita in the rebuilt centre of L'Aquila, open six days a week from six until one and closed on Sundays.

The list: A wine shop and bar that also keeps a beer list, pouring from six in the evening until one in the morning.

Tip: It is two minutes from Piazza Duomo, where the consortium sets up the Vinorum fair in May, so it makes the obvious nightcap during the festival.

Morrison Wine & Cocktails ★ 3.9

Alto TirinoWed-Sun 18:00-02:00.

A small wine and cocktail room on Via dei Sali in the L'Aquila centre, serving from six until two from Wednesday to Sunday. One of the latest addresses in the rebuilt old town.

The list: A bar that runs a wine list beside the cocktail list, open from six in the evening until two in the morning five nights a week.

Tip: It runs later than the enoteche on Via Garibaldi, so it is the place to move to after the kitchens there close at one.

Chiarino ★ 3.8

Alto TirinoMon-Fri 19:00-01:00. Sat 19:00-02:00.

An evening bar on Piazza Chiarino in the L'Aquila centre, open from seven until one on weekdays and until two on Saturday, running a wine list beside the beer taps.

The list: A bar that trades as an enoteca and birreria together, pouring wine and beer from seven in the evening.

Tip: The square is quieter than Via Garibaldi, which makes this the one to pick when you want to hear the person across the table.

La Cantina di Lara ★ 4.2

Terre dei VestiniMon-Sat 17:30-22:30. Closed Sunday.

An evening-only wine bar on Via Firenze in central Pescara, pouring regional bottles with charcuterie and cheese boards, cured meats, bruschetta and locally brewed agricultural beers.

The list: Whites, reds, rosati and barrel-aged bottlings, alongside Abruzzo amari and distillates including genziana, ratafia and amaro San Celestino.

Tip: Ratafia and genziana are the two Abruzzo bitters to ask for after the wine. Both are made from things that grow on the mountains behind the city.

Vinatteria Zolfo ★ 4.0

Terre dei VestiniMon-Thu 18:00-23:45. Fri-Sat 18:00-01:00.

A wine room on Via Clemente De Cesaris that opens at six in the evening and runs to a quarter to midnight in the week and to one at the weekend.

The list: An evening-only wine room in central Pescara, trading as a vinatteria rather than a restaurant, so the list is the menu.

Tip: It is a five minute walk from Corso Manthone, the old town strip, so it works as the first stop of a Pescara evening rather than the last.

Riff ★ 3.9

Terre dei VestiniTue-Sun 18:00-24:00. Closed Monday.

A wine room on Via Piave in central Pescara that trades only in the evening, from six until midnight, Tuesday through Sunday.

The list: An evening wine address on Via Piave, open from six until midnight six nights a week.

Tip: Via Piave has two wine addresses within a hundred metres of each other, so it is the street to walk if the first one is full.

Don Gennaro Enoteca e Degustazione ★ 4.0

Terre dei VestiniTue-Sat 10:00-13:00 and 17:30-22:00. Sun 18:00-22:00. Closed Monday.

An enoteca on Via Cesare Battisti in Pescara that opens for the morning trade and again from half past five for tasting, and is one of the few in the city that serves on a Sunday evening.

The list: A wine shop that pours as well as sells, with an evening tasting service that runs to ten o'clock including Sundays.

Tip: Sunday evening is the gap in Pescara. This is one of the few wine addresses in the centre that is open then.

L'Eno ★ 3.8

Terre di Chieti

A wine shop and bar on Corso Trento e Trieste, the pedestrian spine of Lanciano, in the part of Chieti province that produces the bulk of Abruzzo's wine.

The list: A wine address on the main corso of Lanciano, in the inland Chieti belt that carries most of the region's cooperative volume.

Tip: Lanciano sits above the Trabocchi coast, so an evening here pairs with a day on the Via Verde cycle path below.

Late Tastings in Abruzzo

Cantine Agriverde ★ 4.3

Ortona and the Trabocchi coast

An organic estate at Caldari di Ortona, certified by ICEA since its 1988 conversion, that combines the cellar with accommodation and a restaurant above the Trabocchi coast.

The list: Tastings, cellar visits and retail sales on site, with rooms and a restaurant at the estate so an evening tasting does not need a drive home.

Tip: Because the estate has rooms, this is one of the few places in Abruzzo where a long evening tasting is practical rather than a designated driver problem.

Cantina Zaccagnini ★ 4.2

Casauria

A Bolognano winery in the Casauria corridor, known for the vine shoot tied to the neck of its bottles and for the contemporary art placed through its grounds.

The list: Booked visits and tastings at a Bolognano winery founded in 1978, with a sculpture collection in the grounds.

Tip: The art walk is the reason to come at the end of the day rather than the middle. Book the visit rather than turning up at the gate.

Agricola Cirelli ★ 4.4

Colline Teramane

An organic farm in the Atri badlands about eight kilometres from the sea, with tented suites in the olive grove and terracotta fermented whites to drink beside them.

The list: Amphora fermented Trebbiano and Pecorino from an organic farm, tasted on site where the consortium lists the Cirelli Farm Glamping.

Tip: Michela Cirelli's tented suites sit in the olive grove rather than the vineyard, which is why the evenings here are quiet.
