Eger and Szepasszony-volgy
Now in its ninth edition, this open-cellar Saturday sends visitors between multiple participating Eger cellars on a single shared tasting pass, pouring the freshly settled new vintage alongside older Bikaver verticals in the classic Hungarian pinceszombat (cellar Saturday) format.
Tip: Buy the shared tasting pass in advance where it is offered online; the event has a fixed number of passes and past editions have sold out ahead of the date.
Szepasszony-volgy
An Advent-season cellar tour opens a run of Szepasszony-volgy cellars for candlelit winter tastings paired with mulled wine and seasonal food in the run-up to Christmas, giving the valley a quieter, more intimate character than its summer festival crowds.
Tip: Cellar interiors stay just above freezing even in winter, but the walk between cellars is outdoors, so dress warmly for the walk no matter the daytime temperature in town.
Eger town centre
Eger's main annual wine festival, organised by the town's wine-growing community, fills the town centre with tastings, live music across an Egri Bikaver stage and an Egri Csillag stage, food stalls and a tractor parade. It is the region's signature summer wine event and the closest Eger equivalent to a harvest fair held before the vintage.
Tip: General entry to the festival grounds is free; individual producers and food stalls sell tastings and pours separately, so bring cash in small denominations.
Szepasszony-volgy
Held every year on 20 August, Hungary's fixed State Foundation Day holiday, this valley-wide festival gathers Szepasszony-volgy's cellar owners around the valley's outdoor stage, built in 1984 and renovated in 2013, for open-cellar pours alongside the national holiday's wider celebrations in Eger.
Tip: 20 August is a national holiday with fireworks in Budapest; Eger's own celebration is centred on the valley itself and is considerably calmer and more wine-focused.
Szepasszony-volgy
Eger's official harvest day in Szepasszony-volgy combines regional wines, harvest delicacies, cellar tours, a harvest procession, concerts, family activities and a craft market across the valley in a single September day, run by the town's tourism board.
Tip: The programme runs family activities alongside the wine tastings, making it one of the more family-friendly wine events on the Eger calendar compared with the July festival's louder evening stages.
