Tokaj lies east of Eger across the Zemplen foothills, and the contrast between Eger's Kekfrankos-led Bikaver and Tokaj's botrytised Furmint makes a combined visit an instructive tour of Hungary's two best-known wine identities. The UNESCO-listed Hegyalja cellar villages and the historic town of Tokaj at the Tisza-Bodrog confluence are the main stops.

The Matra wine region around Gyongyos, on volcanic soil beneath the Matra mountains, is grouped with Eger in the country's wider Eger-Matra wine-region classification but specialises in lighter, everyday-priced whites from Olaszrizling, Muller-Thurgau and Chardonnay rather than Eger's red Bikaver tradition. Gyongyos itself is a historic market town with narrow-gauge railways running up into the Matra resorts.

Budapest is the gateway city for most Eger visits, served by direct trains from Keleti station and by the M3 motorway. The capital's wine-bar scene runs Eger Bikaver alongside Tokaj and Villany on most serious by-the-glass lists, and the VinCE Budapest trade fair each January is the first major annual platform to taste Eger's new releases alongside every other Hungarian region.

Tip: A day trip from Budapest to Eger and back is comfortably feasible by direct train, allowing a morning castle and cellar visit with a return by early evening.
Bukk National Park, a 431 square kilometre limestone upland, sits immediately north of the Eger wine region, its karst caves and ravines forming the high ground above the vineyard belt. Szilvasvarad, on the park's edge, is best known for its Lipizzaner stud farm, horse museum and the Szalajka valley's waterfall and narrow-gauge railway.

Miskolc, a major city in north-eastern Hungary, sits within an easy drive of Eger, with the resort district of Lillafured a further twelve kilometres into the Bukk hills. Lillafured's neo-Renaissance Palace Hotel, artificial Lake Hamori and the Anna, Istvan and Szeleta caves make it a full day out on its own, and the route makes a natural stop on a longer loop between Eger and Tokaj.
