When to visit Kakheti: harvest, en primeur and the calendar that shapes a cellar visit.
Spring
- Opening the qvevri: Kakhetian-method whites sit on their chacha until spring, so this is when the seals come off and the new amber wines are poured for the first time.
- Vine work on the valley floor: Kakheti's vineyards sit at 400 to 700 m in the Alazani and Iori basins on humus-carbonate, black and alluvial soils. Spring is canopy and ground work, and cellars are quiet enough for unhurried tastings.
- The mountain roads are still shut: Tusheti's visitor season does not open until June, so a spring trip stays on the valley floor: Telavi, Tsinandali, Kvareli, Gurjaani and Sighnaghi.
Summer
- Tusheti opens: The Tusheti Protected Areas administration moves up to Omalo for the season, which runs June to October, with 11 marked routes, hired guides and horses.
- The cool rooms at Kvareli: The Kvareli tunnel holds 12 to 16 degrees in any month, which is the point of it in August. The wine cave opens daily 10:00 to 20:00 and the restaurant until 22:00.
- Lagodekhi's waterfall trails: Five marked trails run out of the Lagodekhi managed reserve, to the Grouse and Ninoskhevi waterfalls, the 11th century Machi castle and Black Rock Lake.
- Live music nights at Lopota: Lopota's jazz club opens only on live music nights, which in July and August run Friday to Sunday from 21:00, with cocktails rather than a wine list.
Autumn
- Rtveli: The Georgian harvest, late September in eastern Georgia, several days of picking that end each evening in a table and vintage songs. The dates move with the fruit.
- Alaverdoba: The gathering at Alaverdi Monastery peaks on 28 September, the day of Saint Joseph of Alaverdi, and has an agricultural fair in its 19th century history.
- The Gurjaani wine festival: Gurjaani's October fair in Akhtala Park, running since 2017, with tastings, grape treading in the satsnakheli and a Kakhetian table.
- The reds come off their skins: Red ferments in qvevri run 7 to 10 days and two weeks at most, so by late autumn the new Saperavi is already off the chacha while the whites stay on it.
Winter
- The qvevri stays sealed: White wine made the Kakhetian way rests on its chacha right through the winter. Cellar visits in this season are about the vessels and the method, not about new bottles.
- Telavi indoors: The low season is when Telavi's own sights earn the trip: King Erekle II's palace museum on the central square, the 900-year-old plane tree and Nadikvari Park above the valley.
