Saperavi, RkatsiteliGurjaani
A Gurjaani marani working in buried qvevri on Ekvtime Takaishvili Street, with awards from the Georgian wine association competitions listed on its own site.
Why locals love it: Gurjaani town itself gets skipped between Telavi and Sighnaghi, and this is a working marani on a side street rather than a visitor centre.
Tip: Nine of Georgia's appellations sit in Gurjaani municipality, so pair this cellar with the October festival in Akhtala Park if the dates line up.
Saperavi17 haTatulashvili familyGurjaani
A Gurjaani estate working Saperavi alone on the northern slope of the Tsiv-Gombori ridge at 465 m, on limestone and clay, with the fruit farmed organically across 17 hectares.
Why locals love it: One grape, one slope and no bottling in weak years. The estate says it makes wine only when the season allows, so the range on the table changes from visit to visit.
Tip: Ask which vintages were declared before you plan the tasting; the estate skips years rather than bottling through them.
Saperavi, Rkatsiteli, Kisi, Mtsvane KakhuriTelavi
A Kisiskhevi cellar bottling under the Orgo and Dilao labels, with Rkatsiteli, Kisi, Mtsvane and Saperavi in qvevri plus a reserve Saperavi and a qvevri-fermented sparkling.
Why locals love it: Kisiskhevi is best known for the big estate down the road, and most visitors drive past the Orgo cellar without knowing the qvevri sparkling is made there.
Maisuradze familyORGANIC CERTIFIEDNapareuli
An organic winery founded by Goga Maisuradze at Lopota in the Napareuli microzone, now run by his family, with certified bio vineyards, limited production and a sommelier-led tasting.
Why locals love it: It sits inside a large lake resort, so the winery reads as a hotel amenity from the road when it is a working organic estate in the Napareuli microzone.
Tip: Book the tasting rather than the restaurant table if the wine is the point; the two are sold separately at Lopota.
Rkatsiteli, Kisi, Mtsvane Kakhuri, Khikhvi, SaperaviFounded 2014CAUCASCERTNaturalAkhmeta
A natural qvevri producer founded in 2014 at Akhmeta, a member of the Natural Wine Association Georgia, working skin-contact whites macerated for six months and bottled unfiltered.
Why locals love it: Akhmeta is the municipality most visitors only cross on the way to Alaverdi, and the wine house is a small natural producer rather than a coach stop.
Tip: Their amber range is small and sells through, so check stock on the online shop before making the drive up to Akhmeta.
Rkatsiteli, Khikhvi, Kisi, Mtsvane Kakhuri, SaperaviGurjaani
A Vachnadziani cellar working five dry qvevri wines by the Kakhetian method, with two fortified wines and three chachas, one of them eight years in oak.
Why locals love it: Vachnadziani is off the Telavi to Sighnaghi run, and Ibero's fortified wines and long-aged chacha are a corner of Kakheti most tasting menus skip.
Tip: Tastings are priced and published: a five-variety qvevri flight, a choose-your-own and a full estate flight, with lunch and a Georgian table booked separately.
