Eger has no fortified-wine tradition in the Port or Sherry sense; its richest style is Egri Bikaver Grand Superior, whose depth comes from low yields, extended oak ageing and single-vineyard fruit rather than any addition of spirit.

Tip: Ask specifically for a Grand Superior single-vineyard Bikaver for a concentrated, low-yield red; it is the functional analogue to a fuller-bodied fortified pour without being fortified.

Unlike Tokaj, Eger has no dedicated traditional-method Pezsgo (sparkling) specialism; the region's aromatic Egri Csillag white blend fills the aperitif role that sparkling wine plays in other Hungarian regions, served chilled on cellar terraces through the summer season.
