Kiralyleanyka in Eger

Gal Tibor and the Fuzio cellar tunnels ★ 4.6

Eger PDOKekfrankos, Kadarka, Olaszrizling, KiralyleanykaEger town centre

Gal Tibor's cellar in central Eger runs 200 to 300 years deep into rhyolite tuff, part of the roughly 140 kilometres of tunnels honeycombing the town, and connects to Fuzio, the winery's own dining venue that pours single-vineyard bottlings from Nagy-Eged, Pajados and Sikhegy.

Tip: Fuzio runs dinner service on Friday and Saturday evenings by reservation, a rarer late-evening food and wine pairing than most Eger cellar-door operations offer.

Gal Tibor Egri Csillag ★ 4.2

Egri CsillagOlaszrizling, Kiralyleanyka, Sauvignon BlancEUR 8-10 retail (3,350 HUF at the winery webshop)

Gal Tibor's entry-level Egri Csillag is an aromatic Carpathian-basin white blend and a reliable everyday-priced introduction to the winery's range, sold directly from the estate's own webshop.

Tip: Serve well chilled as a summer aperitif; the blend's Sauvignon Blanc component gives it more citrus lift than a straight Olaszrizling.

St. Andrea Napbor Egri Csillag ★ 4.2

Egri CsillagOlaszrizling, Leanyka, KiralyleanykaEUR 10-12 retail (4,450 HUF at the winery webshop)

Napbor is St. Andrea's entry-level Egri Csillag, drawing on the Egerszalok estate's Carpathian-basin white varieties for an approachable, everyday-priced introduction to the winery's white range.

Tip: Egerszalok is also home to Hungary's mineral-terrace thermal spa; pair a cellar stop with a soak, since the two sit within walking distance of each other.

Thummerer Egri Csillag ★ 4.0

Egri CsillagOlaszrizling, Kiralyleanyka, LeanykaEUR 5-7 retail (2,299 HUF at the winery webshop)

Thummerer's Egri Csillag is one of the least expensive bottlings of the category from any established Eger producer, an easy entry point into the white blend that was created as a counterpart to Bikaver.

Tip: At this price it is a sound everyday white; step up to St. Andrea's or Gal Tibor's Csillag bottlings for more concentration if the occasion calls for it.

Thummerer Egri Kiralyleanyka ★ 3.9

Eger PDO whiteKiralyleanykaEUR 5-7 retail (2,299 HUF at the winery webshop)

A single-varietal Kiralyleanyka from Thummerer, one of the Carpathian-basin white grapes that also goes into Egri Csillag blends, bottled here on its own at an entry-level price.

Tip: Kiralyleanyka's floral, off-dry-leaning character makes it a good match for the region's fruit-forward strudel desserts rather than a straight aperitif pour.
