In the glass
Aroma: dark cherry, Mediterranean scrub, spice, iron mineral
Palate: dark fruit, herbal, mineral, firm tannin
Tenuta Gatti's Nero d'Avola from the Nebrodi slopes in the Messina province is unusually mineral and herbal compared to southern Sicilian examples: the altitude and Nebrodi scrubland influence give a cooler, more aromatic character to this northerly Nero d'Avola.
What it pairs with
-
Grilled lamb with Sicilian wild herbs
The herbal mineral character matches the distinctive wild herb landscapes of the Nebrodi hills. -
Braised pork with fennel and olives
Dark fruit and Mediterranean herb character complement the classic Sicilian pork braise. -
Aged Sicilian salumi
Mineral depth and dark fruit complement the character of cured island pork.
History
Tenuta Gatti, a historic 217-hectare estate founded in 1825 at Librizzi in the Messina province, produces Nero d'Avola at an unusually northerly and high-altitude location. The Nebrodi slopes produce a distinctly different expression of the variety compared to the southern Sicilian heartland.
