Alois Lageder's selection Pinot Grigio combining immediately-pressed grapes with partial skin contact and whole-grape fermentation. Sourced from vineyards at 210-740 metres on stony, sandy limestone soils; the wine brought skin-contact orange-style winemaking into the regional mainstream. Demeter-certified biodynamic.

What it pairs with

  • Pan-seared scallops with herbs
The wine's textural grip from skin contact meets sweet shellfish while mineral finish balances richness.
  • Speck with rye bread
Pinot Grigio's traditional Tyrolean pairing; the wine's body holds against cured pork.
  • Vegetable risotto with sage
Skin-contact texture and mineral spine match risotto; spice notes echo sage butter.

History

Alois Lageder pioneered partial-skin-contact Pinot Grigio in Alto Adige with the Porer cuvee in the mid-2000s, bringing orange-wine techniques into the mainstream Pinot Grigio category. Some grapes are pressed immediately; others are left in contact with skins and whole grapes for variable durations to build texture.

  1. 2005 — First Porer Pinot Grigio vintage introduces skin-contact technique to mainstream Pinot Grigio
  2. 2008 — Lageder estate Demeter biodynamic certification

Frequently asked about Porer Pinot Grigio

What does Porer Pinot Grigio taste like?

Pear, ripe apple, spice and subtle skin-contact notes on the nose; yellow stone fruit, saline minerality, textural grip and a mineral finish on the palate. Medium-bodied, dry, with high acidity.

When should I drink Porer?

Drink between 3 and 12 years from vintage. The skin-contact texture makes Porer unusually age-worthy for Pinot Grigio; cellared bottles develop honey and intense mineral character.

How is Porer different from regular Pinot Grigio?

Porer combines immediately-pressed grapes with partial skin contact and whole-grape fermentation, building texture and structure absent from typical mass-market Pinot Grigio. Lageder pioneered the technique in Alto Adige.

Is Porer biodynamic?

Yes. Porer is Demeter-certified, as is the rest of the Lageder estate since 2008.
