Eloi Durrbach planted Trevallon in the Alpilles foothills in 1973 and bottled the first vintage in 1976. The wine declassified to vin de pays in 1994 after the AOC required a maximum 20 percent Cabernet (the Trevallon blend is 50-50 Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah). Now bottled as IGP Alpilles and considered an IGP Alpilles cult red.

Tip: The Blanc, a Marsanne-Roussanne blend in small quantity, is even harder to source than the rouge.

Tip: The Sainte-Victoire sub-appellation sits at higher altitude than the coastal Cotes de Provence; Gassier's parcel-selection roses age across two years rather than the standard six months.

Chateau Routas Rouvier Rouge ★ 3.9

Rouvier is the Coteaux Varois red of Chateau Routas, built on Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon with Grenache fleshing out the mid-palate. Approachable Provençal red at supermarket prices, well under twenty euros.

Tip: Coteaux Varois reds are the least-known face of Provence; this is the inexpensive way to taste the cooler inland Var alongside the appellation's better-known rose.
