Three days in Sancerre and the Upper Loire ★ 4.7

  1. Day 1

    Morning
Arrive Sancerre by car from Paris (2 hours via A6 and A77). Park in Sancerre town centre and walk to the hilltop view of the Loire river and Pouilly-sur-Loire across the water. Visit the Maison des Sancerre interpretation centre for an overview of the appellation's three soil types (Caillottes, Terres Blanches, Silex).
    Afternoon
Drive 5 minutes to Chavignol for the canonical Sancerre cellar afternoon. Visit Henri Bourgeois (book at least a week ahead) for a tasting across the Caillottes-Silex spectrum. Walk the GR3 footpath through the Chavignol slopes for views of the Monts Damnes vineyard.
